On the evening of 23 August 1945, four men from Bradford and District, all recently acquainted, Messrs H Roan, A Baynes, F Ives and V W Kane, met and discussed the possibility of forming a society. They agreed to finance expenses and Messrs Roan and Ives offered the use of company equipment and even staff to help with the job.
From this beginning the Yorkshire Cactus Society was born, grew quickly, and formed the basis for what has eventually become the British Cactus and Succulent Society. The Bradford Branch is justly proud that it was the first branch, and that Mr Roan had insisted that Mr Baynes from Shipley should be the Number 1 member.
Today we still meet regularly on the second Wednesday of the month at Shipley Library. See our meetings page for further details.
Our meetings are accompanied by a table show, and we have plants and sundries for sale at competitive prices. We also have a comprehensive library of specialist publications.
You will always be made very welcome at any of our meetings. Do come along and visit us.
